53: Words “The Art of Fielding” by Chad Harbach

26 Oct

The Art of Fielding is set against the backdrop of college baseball but has little to do with sports. Reminiscent of Bernard Malamud and Saul Bellow, the tone is cloudy as a Wisconsin autumn afternoon with characters that jump off the page. Seems the best sort of fielding is done without a glove.

Certainly one of the most buzzed-about books of the fall, Chad Harbach’s debut is a generous old-fashioned novel of baseball and literature at a small Wisconsin college. Diane’s review really says it all as far as teen appeal

53: Words “Bad Luck and Trouble”

Reacher. He’s the good guy. Don’t mess with him or his special investigators. In “Bad Luck and Trouble,” the bad guys mess with the investigators and pay the price. Lee Child has a deft hand at furious action, bigger than life characters and even a bit of humor. One of the series’ best.

53: Words- “Shelter” by Harlan Coben

22 Sep

Exit Myron, enter Mickey. The first in a new YA series from Harlan Coben, “Shelter” picks up with the rather lame “Live Wire” ended. There are more threads here than in your Egyptian cotton dress shirt and a few either don’t organically hang together. That said, “Shelter” is a fun, fast-paced read.

53: Words- “The Cleaner” by Brett Battles

Quinn is a throwback. He is a cleaner who fixes messes for some top secret governmental agency. He’s a thinking man’s agent but with enough muscle, acumen and derring-do to get his way. “The Cleaner” is the first in the series and while a bit meandering in spots is a pleasing worthwhile thriller.

53: Words “Fun & Games” by Duane Swierczynski

3 Sep

Duane Swierczynski smiled and handed me an autographed copy of “Fun & Games” at the big bookshow. To date, one of my top reads of 2011.  Charlie Hardie, an ex-Philadelphia cop of sorts with a bad case of PTSD, stumbles upon a group of cleaners who specialize in righting wrongs.  Thrill ride ensues.

53: Words “Even” by Andrew Grant

3 Sep

Tommie Aaron. Ron Allen. Casey Affleck. Lesser brothers of star siblings. Andrew Grant is to Lee Child. “Even,” is David Trevellyan–Jack Reacher minus machismo + British pedigree.  Setup is crisp. Middle meanders and hits potholes. Ending -solid and sequel worthy. Not the real thing but a good step-Child.

53: Words– Pocket-47 by Jude Hardin.

31 Aug

Nicholas Colt: Lynyrd Skynyrd meets Mike Hammer by way of Jeff Foxworthy. Pocket-47 is a compelling thriller that starts off strong before taking a few odd turns but hitting its stride again for a solid finish. This is one novel that begs for a series featuring this offbeat Southern gumshoe.
